JAMIE BUTLER
I was inspired to write the Girls Rock series in response to a story I saw on "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly" on July 9, 2017. Research had been conducted by Lin Bian (University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign), Sarah-Jane Leslie (Princeton University), and Andrei Cimpian (New York University) which concluded that girls (ages 6-7) still don't think they are as smart as boys! I kept thinking, "Well, that's not right, but I'm sure someone will do something about it!" I went to bed that night thinking about it and woke up the next morning, still thinking about it. Right then I decided that I would do something about it...and I did! I am so thankful to have been inspired to help empower young girls.

I wrote this family motto for my daughters, Zoe and Lola, in January 2011. We chanted it in the car on the drive to school every morning...not kidding! Believe it or not, actually writing it down made the biggest difference in the world. When writing the Girls Rock series, I wanted to quit several times because it became so overwhelming learning how to self-publish. Then I thought about the motto, "I finish what I start." I couldn't let my daughters down; they knew the motto! I encourage you to write a family motto...or modify ours and call it your own!
